Our idea for the redevelopment of Old Spitalfields Market was to preserve at all costs the creative character and charm of the centuries old original site, but to introduce some much needed modern design, technology and building materials to do it. The critical task with this sort of development is to find the right balance between the often conflicting needs of conservation and refurbishment; it called for evolution rather than revolution. To everyone’s immense satisfaction, Old Spitalfields Market has become one of London’s most popular meeting places, with thriving market stalls, shops and restaurants, and is now ranked as one of London’s top ten visitor attractions. Commended in Mayor of Londons Planning Awards 2013 / 2014.
