Across the capital Londoners are getting ready to take to the ice as the festive season’s pop-up skating rinks arrive, and this year there’s a new addition to the line-up at London City Island. The City Island Ice Rink, which opens on 12 December, provides E14’s ultimate open air skating experience, accompanied by culture, crafts and tasty Christmas treats.
Temporary winter ice rinks have become a feature of many London landmarks, including the Tower of London, Hampton Court Palace and the Natural History Museum. As a result, a twirl around the ice and a glass of mulled wine have become as much a part of the festive celebrations as George Michael’s Last Christmas.
City Island Ice rink is making its debut in Hopewell Square, the centrepiece of the 1,706 home London City Island. The rink will be the focus for a string of events and activities, starting with a four-day Christmas market, which will showcase street foods, drinks and gifts, including delights from The Urban Cheese Maker, Espresso Room and Tosier Chocolatemaker.
English National Ballet, which has a new centre at London City Island, will celebrate the ice rink’s opening with a Nutcracker themed musical performance from the English National Ballet Sinfonietta. Visitors will also have the chance to join Nutcracker themed pre-skate dance warm-ups led by English National Ballet dance artists. And for the youngest members of the family, there will be special festive winter wonderland Gymboree classes, with music, movement, singing and dancing.
London City Island will also have attractions for those seeking less energetic ways to celebrate. Wanderlust Wines’ wine tastings and Soul Shakers’ cocktail masterclass will literally get visitors into the Christmas spirit, while crafters can try their hand at workshops in making crackers, wreathes and embroidered baubles.
The rink will be open until 22 December, hosting 45 minute sessions that will extend into the evening for skating under the stars.
